The works of Robert Smith : People

Back in the late 1970’s when my grandfather passed away, he left three sketchbooks that had originally belonged to my great-grandfather, Robert Smith.

I know very little about my great-grandfather other than that he came from Alva in Stirlingshire, Scotland and that he worked with the famous Glasgow architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh, producing some of the exquisite wrought-iron work for the Glasgow School of Art.

While the third of these books contains some mid-twentieth century architectural drawings, the first two are entirely given over to my great grandfather’s pencil sketches and watercolours. Most are dated between the years 1898 and 1903.

This is the first batch of scans and uploads from those sketch books. While the books themselves are very yellowed with age, I’ve tried to use today’s tools to correct the yellowing and present this works as they might have appeared when first created.
